The one where I explain what happened to my winter capsule

I haven’t talked wardrobe capsules in a while. Not to fear, they have not been forgotten 🙂

So, what happened with the winter one?

Welp, I gave it up once I realized that winter wasn’t coming. El Niño crampin’ my capsule-style.

Apparently I live in denial about what the weather ACTUALLY does in htx so I wasn’t able to wear the majority of my warmer fall pieces until after Christmas when we started to get some “cold fronts” blow through.

Soooooo essentially fall capsule turned into winter capsule.

And as much as I love capsule wardrobing I SO need a break from these clothes.

I am counting down to spring and am excited about getting this spring capsule finalized. Here’s to hoping I don’t get idealistic about what Houston springtime actually feels like 😛

Here are a few faves that are coming with me:

The one where I talk about how I’m still transitioning into my fall capsule

The past few days have been the first in a LONG while that stayed below 90 degrees.

That can only mean one thing in H-town. Fall.is.here.
(At least for now)
So I’m taking that as my cue to finish off my summer-to-fall capsule transition and hope that this weather sticks around for a while.
I have some favorite staples and have managed to find a warm weather + cool(er) weather option of each of them. I usually keep one around until the weather motivates me to start wearing its seasonally appropriate counterpart 🙂

See? This way I can wear my favorites all year long.

The one where I talk about casual(ish)

I’m a big fan of casual. But I’m also a big fan of not-so-casual.
Enter the casual(ish) look 🙂
One of the lessons I’ve learned throughout this wardrobe capsule process is that it is important to consider the day-to-night potential that each piece in your closet has.
This is my casual look with this outfit: flats + simple purse + twisted side bun

However, I know that if I wanted to spruce it up a bit, I could.

Add some lace up heels + cute clutch + intentional makeup/ hair + maybe if the weather permits a cool leather jacket and boom you got yo’self a date night outfit 🙂

The one where I talk about my fall uniform

Once I started going to school, I wore a uniform nearly every day of my life.

(Well, at least until college)

I hated it. No choices. Boo. And #alltheteenagerfeelingsandemoticons
Imagine my surprise when I realized I had adopted a sort of unofficial uniform as a GROWN UP. My go-to look, if you will.
This is it:

White shirt + jeans.

Not always the same white shirt or jeans, but the same idea nonetheless.
When I was in high school I used to tease my mom and older sister about how they always wore their “uniform”.
Turns out its the same one I’m rockin’ now.
And y’all this bag is awesome.

The one where I talk about the magic of a side braid

I’ve been a fan of braids forever (said in that slow sandlot voice).

Probably one of the hardest parts of grownupping has been giving up my cherished pigtail braids…enter the side braid.

This is totally my momma hair style of the moment.
(Actually it’s been my momma hairstyle of the summer, but eh, details, details.)
My sweet sister in law taught me how to twist braid from the top and it’s been my magical, quick, still look sort of put together, go-to look. Here’s a handy tutorial if you want to try it out! One thing I will mention about this tutorial is that she stops braiding once she hits the nape of the neck, once I get to that point I just continue one with a normal braid (not the twist method).
I pair this hairstyle with my park fall fashion look of the moment and am good.to.go.

See how totally together I’m pretending I am? I just hope nobody can tell that it only took me 5 minutes to do my hair 😉

It’s still pretty warm here in Houston, but once it cools down I plan on wearing this with my leather jacket to look all “hip-mom” like.

The one with summer wrap up part 3 || pieces I’m carrying over

SO ready to start transitioning into my fall capsule… I need a break from some of these summer clothes.

That’s part of what I LOVE about this wardrobe capsule concept. I get a closet refresh every 3ish months or so.
I’ve started to find this method of intentionality with my clothing to be a bit therapeutic…

I’ll actually be able to transition more pieces into the fall capsule than I expected…largely because I forgot how hot it gets here in the summer and included way too many long-sleeve/layer options in my summer capsule. These are the 8 pieces that I’ll be carrying over; the remainder of the capsule will be made up of items I stored away and a few goodies I purchased.
Chambray Shirt – Michael Kors (similar)
Drapey Vest – Kut from the Kloth
Boyfriend Cardigan – Old Navy (similar)
Non-Sleeve Button up – Banana Republic (similar)
Boyfriend Jeans – American Eagle
Dark Denim Skinnies – Abercrombie & Fitch
Joggers – Gap

I’ve talked before on how I plan to transition into my fall clothes. (Missed it? Check it out here.) Can’t wait to show you the whole capsule—coming soon!

The one with summer wrap up part 2 || least worn pieces

Imagine my surprise when there were items in my capsule that I literally never wore.  As it turns out there was a definitely a reason explaining why. Who knew this process would teach me so much about my choices? Kind of interesting.

Here are some of this season’s mistakes:

WEDGES | I was so excited about the sandal/bootie nature of this shoe. In real life they weren’t very comfortable and comfort is the name of the game in mamaland.
PALAZZO PANTS | So bright. So statement. So cute. So not me. I mean, they didn’t scream versatile clothing capsule option in the first place. I just really wanted them because I’d purchased a matching romper for Little S and was on a mission to have a cute “mommy & me” outfit option. Turns out this mommy needs something a bit more subtle.
TANK DRESS | I love this dress, but never really had an occasion to wear it. I’ll probably set it aside and begin working on a dress capsule for occasions where I’ll actually need dresses. I don’t wear them often enough anymore to make them a part of my regular capsule.
STRIPED BLOUSE | As much as I like the idea of this shirt, I’m just not comfortable in it. Kinda weird, but yeah.
GRAY BUTTON UP | This shirt just wasn’t season appropriate. It was about a billion degrees here this summer so needless to say I couldn’t wear it without sweating through it. Probably better suited for a Spring capsule.
PINK BUTTON UP | See above.
STRIPED SKIRT | This skirt was made from a much heavier cotton than I realized (things you don’t realize when you are trying things on in a very air conditioned environment), the thing that made it especially summer un-friendly was it’s lining…not.breathable.at.all. So needless to say, gonna have to put that one aside until a cooler season rolls along.
HIGH WAISTED FLORAL SKIRT | This skirt just wasn’t good for regular life. Seriously starting to consider that dress/not-so-regular-life capsule.
BLACK T-STRAP SANDALS | I’ve had these sandals for a loooong time and rarely wear them. This summer reminded me why: they are ridiculously uncomfortable and I feel like it makes my feet look extra long + skinny so I don’t like wearing them.

Here’s to hoping I’ve learned enough from these mistakes to 1.) not repeat them and 2.) apply the lessons in my next capsule.
